justice is too much delayed to victims of 1984 and much incomplete——————–

Delhi High Court’s anxiously awaited verdict convicting congress strongman Sajjan Kumar in one of the very long standing cases regarding  rioting against sikhs in 1984 is historic-one. Justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel while awarding Sajjan kumar imprisonment unto last of his natural breath for criminally inciting the mob and leading them to kill five sikhs mercilessly in Raj Nagar part I area in Palam colony in South west Delhi on Nov 1-2, 1984 termed the rioting, “carnage against humanity” which was unbelievable in a civil society like ours. Justices described the 1984 riots a, “ carnage of unbelievable proportions in which over, 2700 sikhs were brutally murdered in Delhi alone. The law and order machinery clearly broke down and it was literally a free of all situation which persisted. The after shocks of those atrocities are still being felt”. These are the words which remind us of the shocking failure of the state itself, which claims to be a welfare state delivering justice to all. The law enforcing agencies had come to the complete standstill for three to four days moments after the assassination of pm Indira Gandhi by her two sikh body-guards at her residence on october 31, 1984. She was a popular and great leader even beyond  national boundaries but the state’s failure in protecting the sikh community in Delhi and elsewhere in the country was a massive damage done to the prestige of the country beyond repairs. The ruling party congress must own the whole responsibility for the unprecedented carnage morally as well as administratively.

Whole Hindi belt had reacted with a vengeance with difference of scale and magnitude but almost entire north India underwent tremors of widespread anger generated by Indira Gandhi’s killing. It was quite natural but the prime duty of the state was to counter that massive reaction from the people through its various agencies. Why did these agencies remained “deaf and dumb” is the biggest question which needs an answer even today as it is the question of the very efficiency of our democratic institutions which are in place to ensure internal peace at all costs. Think if Sajjan Kumar like politicians would have spewed their  venom of communal hatred everywhere in the country then the picture would have emerged thousand times more horrible. In fact, the volunteers from Hindu community came forward to defend and protect the sikhs in their respective pockets directly as well as indirectly. They did not turn into  Durjan Kumar as it was done by Sajjan Kumar under the patronage of the congress. Though, adjoining provinces to Delhi had witnessed sporadic incidents of loot and arson but these rioteers were antisocial elements with personal grudge  against the sikhs. In the wake of this ground situation Delhi’s phenomenal riots invite serious attention even today where there is the seat of the central government itself. The  central government had lost its ultimate boss but the government was still there to contain and regulate Delhi.

Operation Blue-Star was successfully spearheaded by Indira Gandhi and no doubt it was her duty to do it. No province of federal-Bharat can dare to raise banner of revolt against the “ unity and integrity” of the country. A strong and decisive prime minister like great Indira Gandhi could not afford to ignore” secessionist and suicidal” tendency adopted by some sikhs who floated an idea of “Khalistan” unmindful of their great tenth Guru Gobind Singh ji  who had in clear terms dictated that sikhs were there to protect the country from all kinds of upheavals and serve it selflessly. Contrary to it, unlawful and ungraceful activities were being carried out against the country that too from inside the “widely revered” golden temple at Amritsar. Indira Gandhi was the patriot of the highest order possible and her supreme sacrifice can not be belittled. But, whatever happened in the soon aftermath of her assassination was also could not be tolerated because most of the sikhs in our country are integral part of the common-conscience of Bharat itself.

So, not only in Delhi but outside Delhi too culprits must be brought to book and given the harshest punishment possible in our country. It is not just the question fo sikh community who bore the burnt of the reactionary heat but of all who firmly believe that for “two sikhs” murderers frenzy of madness must had not been allowed to disrupt the families of thousnads of innocent sikhs who could not even dream to going against the country. In 1947 Muslim bigots led by Moh. Ali Jinha had compelled bloody and unfortuanate division of the country. Though, parallel does not stand out here between two separate tragedies but in order to bring-out immense communal hatred involved example of a person surviving the day seems justified.

Perhaps, “ The flying sikh” legendary Milkha Singh who eye-witnessed his entire family being butchered comprising his beloved mother, father, brother and sister at the time of partition when he was just 17, would also feel deeply perturbed whenever Delhi’s dreadful happenings would revive before his eyes through the media. Does Bharat of today is similar to Bharat of 1947 or prior to that . As  Nirpreet Kaur then just 16 had seen her father caught by a mob who poured kerosene all over him and a police inspector facilitated match box which led him burnt down alive. Similarly, recalling the pain of Jagdish Kaur the High court bench said, “Here was a woman who, after much struggle, had to perform the cremation of her husband and son by lighting a funeral pyre with the help of furniture and household clothes.”

How many males and females Milkha Singh, Nirpreet Kaur, Jagdish Kaur and many such knowns and unknowns would be emotionally left to bleeding throughout their life for the sin which they could not do at all. Thus, entire country must rise on their feet to seek justice for one of the biggest sin which was committed by rioters in 1984 eveywhere otherwise it wouldn’t be easy to heel the deep wounds of the community severely aggrieved. Dehradun and Roorkee were also the two nearby towns which witnessed some controlled incidents of loot and arson. I, out of all my senses might say that there are some historical blunders of huge national importance which must be put upright like construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya forgetting creed-based grudge as these hide in them seeds of conflicts of enormous proportion. Muslims must come out of their “Babur and Aurangzeb” love-connection who were outsiders and help cementing  Hindu Muslim ties for the sake of the entire country. This matter is purely historical and new history must be created solely outside the supreme court otherwise no one knows which way the wild winds will blow. Let’s  think hard to solve the problem because Ayodhya is our Mecca-Madina, please try to understand in time. Rest of the issues must be solved in accordance with the laws of the land and we ought to mind it sincerely that constitution has come into shape in post Babur-Aurangzeb era. All Hindus including Muslims who love Bharat as their motherland must come forward to build the Ram temple on the same spot where it existed in 1526. The issue has cropped up right here as we do not want any more untoward incident in near future or any time in long future.

                                                                                                                                                                                                -Jai Bharat
