सुषमा स्वराज भले ही आज हमारे बीच न हो किन्तु वे अपनी निर्मल छवि के साथ हमारे मन-मानस में सदा की तरह विराजमान हैं और रहेंगी। ऐसा इसलिए क्योंकि वे सादगी, समरसता और कर्मठता की पराकाष्ठा रहीं। उन्होंने कभी भी जमीन नहीं छोड़ी। हमेशा वे साधारण हाव-भाव के साथ कर्तव्य पथ पर डटी रहीं। उन्होंने विदेश मंत्रालय जैसे मंत्रालय को एक ग्राम प्रधान का बस्ता बना डाला था। बल्कि, यह कहना उचित होगा कि एक ग्राम प्रधान से मिलना कभी कभार उतना आसान न हो जितना विदेश मंत्री सुषमा जी से मिल पाना आसान रहता था। उन्होंने अपनी प्रतिभा और कर्मठता का अनेकों बार परिचय दिया। वे अपने विदेश मंत्री के दायित्व के समय विदेशों में भारतीयों की तकलीफों को लेकर बहुत चुस्ती-फुर्ती का परिचय देती थीं। विपदा में फँसे भारतीयों को सुरक्षित भारत लाने में उनकी लगन का लोहा पीड़ितों के साथ-साथ पूरे भारत ने कई बार माना है। वह भारत की पहली महिला विदेश मंत्री थीं। उनसे पहले इन्दिरा गाँधी दो बार विदेश मंत्री रहीं किन्तु कार्यवाहक विदेश मंत्री। उन्हें भारत में किसी राजनीतिक दल की पहली महिला प्रवक्ता रहने का भी गौरव हासिल है। आपात काल के दौरान सुषमा स्वराज आन्दोलन में उतरी थीं और अपनी सक्रियता के लिए उन्होंने खास पहचान भी बनाई थी। सुषमा जी 2009 में भारत की संसद में विपक्ष की नेता बनी थीं। इस नाते वह 15वीं लोकसभा में भाजपा की ओर से दमदार नेता प्रतिपक्ष साबित हुई थीं। बतौर विदेश मंत्री उन्होंने सितम्बर 2016 में संयुक्त राष्ट्र में हिन्दी में भाषण दिया जिसकी चर्चा देश भर में हुई थी। विश्व हिन्दी सम्मेलनों में वे बढ़-चढ़ कर प्रतिभागी बनती थीं। हिन्दी को संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ की आधिकारिक भाषा बनवाने के लिए उन्होंने जबर्दस्त कोशिश की। वे अनेक भाषाओं में पारंगत थीं। हिन्दी, अंग्रेजी, संस्कृति, हरियाणवी, पंजाबी और यहाँ तक की कन्नड़ और ऊर्दू में भी उनकी पकड़ थी। सुषमा जी भारतीय राजनीतिज्ञों से बड़े मिलनसार अंदाज में पेश आती थीं। इन मुलाकातों में किसी तरह का पूर्वाग्रह आड़े नहीं आता था। कुल मिलाकर सुषमा जी उदार और विशाल हृदया थीं। उनके मन में केवल एक ही इच्छा गुंजायमान रहती थी-वह थी भारत वर्ष का स्वर्णिम उत्थान।
