Himalaya Day (Himalaya Diwas) is celebrated every year on 9 September in Uttarakhand with an aim of conserving and preserving fragile Himalayan ecosystem. Realising the importance of Himalayas for not only the state but for entire nation and the world, Uttarakhand Government in 2015 officially designated this day as annual event. The official theme for Himalaya Day 2026 is “Global Warming and the Himalayas”.
The catastrophic August 2026 Nepal–Tibet disaster, in which the collapse of rock and glacier ice triggered a devastating flood cascade through the Trishuli–Bhotekoshi region, has once again demonstrated how quickly a mountain hazard can transform into a humanitarian disaster. More than 1,300 people have reportedly died, with thousands still missing. The Nepal event involved a complex interaction of unstable slopes, ice, water and mountain topography. However, a warming climate is altering the background conditions in which such disasters occur. Rising temperatures accelerate glacier retreat and can destabilise ice and permafrost, while changing precipitation patterns can increase the likelihood of intense rainfall and sudden floods. Recent scientific work also highlights the growing importance of monitoring glacial lakes, unstable slopes, rampant pollutionand potential cascading hazards across the Himalayas. For Uttarakhand, Nepal is not a distant warning—it is a Himalayan warning. The state has already experienced devastating events such as the 2013 Kedarnath disaster and the 2021 Rishiganga–Dhauliganga catastrophe, while the 2025 Dharali flash-flood episode again exposed the vulnerability of mountain settlements and infrastructure. The causes of individual events differ, but the underlying lesson is common: a warmer and increasingly disturbed Himalayan environment, combined with unplanned construction, road cutting, hydropower development and settlement in vulnerable valleys, can turn natural hazards into major disasters.
The paradox of Devbhoomi
Though major cause of global warming and climate change is the green house emission by major economies and Nepal demanded climate compensation from the USA, China and India for the current disaster, yet local factors are also playing substantial role in aggravating the problem. The Himalayas constitute the ecological, cultural and spiritual foundation of life in Uttarakhand. The forests regulate water, the glaciers feed rivers, the rivers sustain agriculture and settlements, and the mountains provide the landscape that attracts millions of tourists and pilgrims every year as it is popularly known as Devbhoomi—the land of the gods. Millions visit religious destinationsofGarhwal and Kumaon divisions for seeking purity, peace and spirituality, while carrying into them enormous quantities of plastic bottles, packaged food, disposable cups, multilayer packaging and other waste.Similarly, a tourist who admires a pristine Himalayan landscape cannot claim to love the mountains while throwing a plastic bottle into a river or leaving food packaging beside a trekking trail.Burgeoning influx of tourists and devotees is becoming threat to the ecological health of the UttarakhandHimalayas. The Ganga and Yamuna river systems, forests, alpine meadows, wildlife habitats and fragile mountain slopes cannot be treated like the infrastructure of a conventional urban destination. The Himalayan terrain has limited land for landfills, difficult transportation, high rainfall and snow in many areas, steep slopes, fragile drainage systems and highly seasonal population pressures.The challenge is therefore partly technological and administrative—but fundamentally behavioural.
Major Causes of Pollution:-
Tourist towns and pilgrimage routes experience enormous seasonal variations in waste generation. Waste collection systems designed for the resident population may become inadequate during peak pilgrimage and tourism seasons.The National Green Tribunal record on Uttarakhand’s Char Dham region has specifically noted that increased tourism produces significant spikes in plastic waste including bottles, wrappers, multilayer packaging and other materials. The difficult mountain terrain makes collection and transportation particularly challenging. Hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, camps and pilgrimage facilities generate substantial quantities of wastewater.Untreated or inadequately treated sewage entering streams and rivers is potentially far more consequential than visible litter because it affects water quality, aquatic ecosystems and downstream communities.Increasing vehicular traffic, congestion, road construction, diesel generators and dust contribute to deteriorating air quality in heavily visited valleys and towns.The Himalayan geography can further complicate dispersion of pollutants in some locations.Road widening, tunnels, hotels, parking areas and other infrastructure are essential for connectivity and economic development—but poorly planned construction can increase: slope instability, dust,debris dumping, sediment entering streams, destruction of vegetation, pressure on drainage system etc. Pilgrimage and tourism also bring amplified music, vehicle horns, generators, construction and commercial activities.Noise pollution is particularly inappropriate in ecologically sensitive areas and wildlife habitats. Increased helicopter operations in Uttarakhand during pilgrimage season are also disturbing the precariously poised ecosystem. Hotels, restaurants, langars, dhabas and pilgrimage centres can generate substantial quantities of biodegradable waste.Food waste should ideally be processed locally through composting or other decentralised systems rather than transporting long distances.
Pilgrimage and Tourism: problem or opportunity?
Religious tourism presents a unique opportunity.If millions of pilgrims can be mobilised for religious purposes, the same collective consciousness can be mobilised for environmental protection.A simple message can become powerful:“Leave your faith at the shrine, but take your waste back with you.”Pilgrimage authorities should make environmental responsibility part of the pilgrimage experience itself.Before entering major pilgrimage corridors, pilgrims could receive a short environmental briefing covering:no littering; no single-use plastic; waste segregation; protection of rivers; responsible use of water; respect for wildlife; prohibition of open burning; responsible disposal of religious offerings. This should not be merely a poster campaign.Behaviour must be linked to incentives and enforcement.
Tourism provides employment to local communities, sustains transport and hospitality businesses, supports handicrafts and local products and creates economic incentives for conservation.The problem is unmanaged and irresponsible tourism.The Indian Himalayan Region faces enormous waste-management pressures because of tourism. Therefore, Uttarakhand needs to move from:Mass Tourism → Responsible Tourism → Regenerative Tourism. The objective should be that tourists leave the mountains economically stronger, socially respected and ecologically no worse than when they arrived.
The CSIR-IIP–Waste Warriors opportunity
On 7 September 2026, CSIR–Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR-IIP), Dehradun organised a programme focused on Himalayan sustainability, waste management and climate change. CSIR-IIP and NGO Waste Warriors agreed to collaborate in waste management and formaliseda Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The discussions specifically emphasised data management, localised solutions and stakeholder collaboration.This is significant because the two organisations bring complementary strengths.CSIR-IIP can contribute scientific and technological expertise;material and waste characterisation; research on plastic and hydrocarbon-related waste;technology assessment;laboratory facilities; data analysis; innovation and technology development and scientific validation of waste-management solutions. CSIR-IIP Dehradun in collaboration with GAIL has developed an eco-friendly technology to convert polyolefinic waste plastic into automotive-grade diesel, gasoline and LPG. The Dehradun based Social Development forCommunities (SDC) Foundation led by AnoopNautiyal acts as a social technology partner for collecting plastic waste through a decentralized network of “Plastic Banks”.CSIR-IIP is fulfilling its duty of CSR and collaborating now with another NGO “Waste Warriors”. Waste Warriors can contribute in field-level implementation; community mobilisation; behavioural-change programmes; waste collection and segregation experience; engagement with local governments; experience in Himalayan waste-management systems and linkages with recyclers and local communities.Waste Warriors describes its objective as developing inclusive and participatory waste-management solutions for the eco-sensitive Indian Himalayan Region and works with government departments and other institutions on policy and implementation. The proposed collaboration could establish a “Himalayan Waste Innovation and Demonstration Programme” with selected pilot locations that include waste mapping; waste quantification; material characterisation; source segregation; decentralised processing; plastic recovery; composting; material recovery facilities; waste-worker training; tourist behaviour monitoring; technology demonstrations and data-driven policy recommendations. The recently reported agreement is therefore an opportunity to develop a replicable Himalayan model rather than another isolated cleanliness campaign.
What should the Uttarakhand Government and general public do?
Government can establish carrying-capacity-based tourism. Every major tourist and pilgrimage destination should have an evidence-based assessment ofmaximum daily visitors;water availability;sewage-treatment capacity;solid-waste capacity; parking capacity; emergency medical capacity and road capacity.Visitor numbers should be determined by ecological capacityand not by the market demand. Government should make “Bring Back What You Bring” compulsory with a motive what enters the mountain must either leave the mountain or be scientifically processed there.Tour operators, hotels and pilgrimage agencies should be made responsible for waste generated by their visitors. Introduce deposit-refund systems all over the places as it has already proved its efficacy.A digital deposit-refund system for plastic bottles was introduced in the Kedarnath region, with refundable deposits linked to the return of bottles. The approach generated recycling and local employment benefits. Every commercial establishment, Government premises and religious places should strictly observe the principle of segregation at source by segregating wet waste; dry recyclable waste; reject waste and hazardous/sanitary waste. Mountain regions need a decentralized system for carrying every kilogram of waste from remote areas to distant plains for recycling. It can be done in the following manner: organic waste → compost/bioprocessing; plastic → sorting/baling/recycling; glass → authorised recycling; metal → recycling; reject waste → scientifically managed disposal. Effective local processing will minimize transportation. Mounds of garbage at Tambakhani in Uttarkashi without processing and transportation are perennially polluting Bhagirathi River. Such unsavoury sights will disappear with effective planning. Glaciers; alpine meadows; wetlands; river sources; wildlife habitats; national parks and trekking routes should be earmarked as environmental protection zones in order to receive stricter environmental standards and controlled human activities.Every major tourist and pilgrimage settlement should have:100% sewage collection + treatment + monitoring.Hotels and commercial establishments should not be allowed to discharge untreated wastewater into natural drains.A hotel or resort should not receive a licence merely because it meets building requirements.Its environmental score should include:waste segregation;sewage treatment; water conservation;plastic reduction;energy efficiency; local employment and responsible waste disposal.
General public that include pilgrims, tourists and local residents may also contribute in environmental protection and conservation by carrying a reusable water bottle and a reusable shopping bag; disposing waste at authorised collection points; segregating waste; preferring locally produced food; using public transport/shared transport where possible; staying in environmentally responsible accommodation; respecting wildlife and forests; reporting illegal dumping; avoiding littering, unnecessary honking, keeping the streams & rivers clean and leaving the destination cleaner than you found it. Local communities should be the partners and custodians of environment policy. Women-led self-help groups, youth groups, Van Panchayats, Panchayati Raj institutions and local entrepreneurs can become central to decentralised waste systems. A village should be able to earn from:collection → segregation → recovery → recycling → composting. This converts waste from a liability into an economic resource. This converts a village into self- sustained clean village in line with Mawlynnog in Meghalaya-the cleanest village in India.Jhala village near Dharali in Uttarkashi has already adopted this concept and need is to others to follow suit. Uttarakhand’s environmental policy could be built around the principle of Clean India viz. Reduce-single-use plastic; Reuse-promote refill system; Recover-recyclable material; Restore-polluted rivers, degraded slopes, forest and dumpsites and Responsible-Make Government, businesses, tourists, pilgrims and local communities accountable.The government should establish a permanent Himalayan Sustainability Mission with measurable annual targets such as keep a track on:waste generated per tourist; waste recovered; percentage segregated; plastic bottles recovered; sewage treated; river-water quality; air quality; vehicle emissions; landfill/legacy waste; number of environmentally compliant hotels; tourist carrying capacity and local green jobs.
Conclusion: The Himalayas cannot be replaced
The Himalayas need protection not only as an ecological treasure but as a life-support system for millions of people downstream.Uttarakhand needs to move from a post-disaster relief model to a climate-resilient Himalayan development model. Continuous satellite and ground-based monitoring of glaciers and glacial lakes, early-warning systems, hazard mapping, climate-resilient roads and bridges, strict regulation of construction in river valleys, and stronger disaster preparedness should become priorities. Development cannot be stopped in the mountains, but it must respect the carrying capacity and geological fragility of the Himalayas.Continuous use of technology, perennial scientific research, strict Government regulations and responsible behaviour by the public will help conserve Himalayas. The mountains have survived geological upheavals for millions of years. They may not, however, survive an economic model in which millions of people arrive with disposable consumption habits and expect the Himalayas to absorb the consequences.The recent CSIR-IIP–Waste Warriors initiative provides an important opportunity to bridge science, technology, community action and policy. Uttarakhand should aspire not merely to have clean pilgrimage towns, but to create environmentally responsible pilgrimage corridors. Pilgrimage and tourism should pay for protection of Himalayas rather than ruining them. The Himalayas give us water, forests, biodiversity, spirituality and livelihood. The least we can give them in return is our responsibility.This approach would allow Uttarakhand to move from “tourism in the Himalayas” to “tourism for the Himalayas”—a model that could potentially be replicated across the entire Indian Himalayan Region.
